Daniel Negreanu is widely considered one of the best all-around tournament poker players in the world. He displayed his uncanny ability at putting opponents on hands at the World Series of Poker. In a situation where most of us would have lost a ton of chips, Negreanu was able to get off a big hand with ease. The hand started with Adam Jones limping in with the 7-2 of hearts. Negreanu was next to act, and made it 2,200 chips in to go with pocket nines. The raise apparently wasn’t enough to scare off Peter Antill, who called the raise with pocket fours.

It seems that David Stucke felt he was priced in with his K-10 off-suit, and also called the raise in the big blind. For some reason, Jones also called the raise with his 7-2 of hearts. So four of them saw a flop of 2-4-6, and Jones came out betting 2,600 chips with his pair of deuces. Negreanu then raised it 10,300 more, and after a minute or two, Antill called with his set. That cleared the other two players out of the hand and Antill and Negreanu looked at an eight on the turn.

Negreanu was already sensing something from Antill, and checked his over pair. Antill then checked as well, and the two players saw another eight come on the river. Negreanu wasn’t taking the bait, and once again he checked the action to Antill. As soon as Antill said, “I’ll make it 15,000”, Negreanu said right back to him, “I make it 15,000 with pocket sixes or sevens, which is it?” The pot was over 48,000, and the bet wasn’t that big, but Negreanu eventually said, “I’m gonna fold second-best hand”, and mucked his over pair.

Luckily Daniel Negreanu can’t see through your soul when you’re playing at Pinnacle Sports Poker. Antill gave Negreanu too much information about his hand through his actions, and that’s difficult to do online. Luckily most of the players you’ll play against at Pinnacle Sports Poker won’t come near the poker skill of a Daniel Negreanu.

The final table of the 2008 World Series of Poker had lots of entertaining hands. We saw some hero calls and some bold moves at the poker tournament, but no hand could compare to the crushing beat that Scott Montgomery suffered to get eliminated in fifth place. He had just suffered a big loss for a good portion of his chips, but it looked like he was going to get right back into contention until the unspeakable happened.

Holding A-3 of diamonds, Montgomery pushed his remaining stack of 6.3 million. After a bit of thought, Peter Eastgate made the call with pocket sixes. After the hole cards were turned over, it looked like Montgomery would be going home. But a flop of A-4-Q gave him a commanding lead in the hand. After the turn brought another ace, Eastgate was down to two outs – or so it appeared.

At this point in the hand, Dennis Phillips decided he would tell everyone that he had mucked a six earlier pre-flop. Pocket cams showed that he indeed did muck one of the sixes, so Eastgate was down to one out, and a 2% chance of winning the hand. No one believed he had a chance, but the poker gods had other things in mind on this day.

Unbelievably, the river brought the final six, knocking out Scott Montgomery in fifth place. The crowd let out a huge gasp when the card hit the board; nobody could believe Montgomery’s bad run of luck. He still earned over $3 million, so it’s hard to feel bad for the guy. He also has one of the best all-time WSOP final table bad beat stories to tell for the rest of his life.

So now you know that bad beats like this don’t just happen at Pinnacle Sports Poker. Every game has crazy beats, even live games with hundreds of cameras on hand. Don’t feel so bad the next time you get your chips in with a big lead, only to suffer a crushing defeat. Nothing is for sure until the hand is over, or your opponent is drawing dead.

Most Pinnacle Sports Poker players know that Phil Hellmuth made a serious run at the World Series of Poker main event tournament this year. He ended up going out in 45th place, but not before throwing a few tantrums at the Rio along the way. After having already served out penalties for verbal abuse to his opponents, Hellmuth found himself sitting in a hand one position off the button with Ac-2h. He raised the 30K blinds to 90K and got a call from the player on the button, Allen Kennedy.

They saw a flop of Jd-2d-9h, which both players decide to check. Kennedy was holding an open-ended straight draw, while Hellmuth had only a pair of deuces. The turn card was the 8h, which completed Kennedy’s straight and had Hellmuth drawing dead. But instead of checking, Hellmuth decided to bet out 60K into a pot of 257K. He must have thought that Kennedy was on big cards because Kennedy called the pre-flop raise.

Kennedy decided to play it cool, and just called the 60K. The river card was a disaster card for Hellmuth. It was the Ad, giving Hellmuth two pair – aces over deuces. Hellmuth thought he had the best hand, because he made a bet of 175K into a pot of 377K. He was betting his hand for value, thinking that perhaps Kennedy had A-K or A-Q and would make the call. But Kennedy, who decided to ignore the fact that there were now three diamonds on the board, raised Hellmuth the rest of his stack. That brought the pot to over a million in chips.

Hellmuth thought about it for a couple of minutes and made the call, making the pot worth 1,389,000. Kennedy flipped over his straight and Hellmuth went into his ‘Poker Brat’ mode, jumping up from the table and running for the stands. As usual Hellmuth didn’t give his opponent credit for a hand he himself wouldn’t have played, and it cost him a good portion of his chips. He spent the next couple of minutes whining to friends and family in the crowd about how he couldn’t tell Kennedy what he thought of his poker skills.

The WSOP November Nine certainly was a group of good players. Throughout the final table coverage there weren’t many mistakes made by the players, and some showed amazing poker strategy and instincts in pressure situations. One of these clutch hands occurred when there were four players left at the WSOP final table. With only Peter Eastgate, Ivan Demidov, Dennis Phillips and Ylon Schwartz remaining in the daddy of poker tournaments, Demidov showed why he’s been one of the hottest live poker players in the world over the last five months.

Demidov was in the small blind and made the call of 300,000 with K-7 of spades. Phillips and Schwartz had already folded, and then Eastgate checked his option to raise from the big blind because all he had was 3-2 off-suit. The pot was $1.5M, and they saw a flop of 7h-3d-6s.

Both players got a piece of the flop, but for some reason Demidov decided to check his top pair. Eastgate then bet out 850,000, which was quickly called by Demidov. The turn was the king of diamonds, giving Demidov an even bigger lead with kings-up.

Once again Demidov slow played his lead and checked into Eastgate. Eastgate seemed to realize that his pair of threes was no good, and he checked the action to the river. The river brought Eastgate one of two possible outs to win, the three of clubs, giving Eastgate trip threes and the lead in the hand. Demidov, thinking his hand was good, came out betting 1.65M in chips with his two pair. Eastgate then made his move, raising it another 3.85M, bringing the pot to $10,325,000.

Somehow Ivan Demidov was able to give Eastgate credit for the trips. He surprisingly folded his two pair with very little hesitation. It was an important fold in the game because it allowed Demidov to remain in a dominant position, which eventually contributed to his second-place finish and a payday of over $5,790,000.

The 2008 WSOP main event, the biggest poker tournament on the circuit, had one hand that you’ll be lucky to see again in your lifetime. You could play at Pinnacle Sports Poker for decades, and still only have a slim chance of witnessing something like the following exciting outcome. At a table that included Everybody Loves Raymond star Ray Romano, two players played a poker hand that you would only expect to see in the movies. Justin Philips and Motoyki Mabuchi ended up getting all their chips in the middle when both of them were sure they had the best hand.

Philips was dealt K-J of diamonds while Mabuchi was dealt pocket aces. A flop of Ah-9c-Qd came off, and a couple of smaller bets were made and called. The turn card was the 10d, giving Philips the open-ended straight flush draw. Mabuchi bet out his trip aces and was again called by Philips. Then the miracle Ad hit the river, giving Philips the royal flush and Mabuchi quad aces. Both players took their time to act, trying not to give away the huge monster hand they were both holding.

Mabuchi led out with a big bet, and after Philips raised him back, Mabuchi paused for a few seconds and then threw in his chips, saying, “I gamble” in a heavy Japanese accent. He was trying to make it look like he was making a loose bet, hoping to induce a call from Philips.

Needless to say Philips called, and quickly showed his royal flush for the win. The hand sent Mabuchi packing for the tournament. He must have been the first player to ever get knocked out of the WSOP while holding quad aces.

The chances of that hand occurring are one in 2.7 billion, so you might want to see it. Don’t wait for a similar hand to happen in your home game; you might be waiting for the rest of your life.

Roberto Romanello showed that there’s more to him that just selling fish at his fish-and-chips restaurant in Swansea, Wales. After being dealt pocket jacks, Romanello was facing a big pre-flop raise from Greg Geller. Geller was holding pocket kings, but the raise wasn’t enough to deter Romanello or Matusow, who was holding pocket nines. The flop was A-K-J and all three players checked. The action was sure to heat up on the turn with two players holding sets, but a scare card slowed things down for a minute.

The turn card was a 10, making it an easy situation for someone to have a ‘broadway straight’. The betting got checked around again, but then the river brought another 10. Matusow, who was pretty much out of the hand after the flop, checked again. Romanello bet $1800 into a $1950 pot with his jacks-over full house, and was promptly raised by Geller and his kings-over boat. He made it $6000 to go, and looked sure to get a big payoff from Romanello after Matusow folded.

After asking if Geller would show his hand if he mucked, Romanello agonized over his next move. For most of us, including Matusow, that call would have been a no-brainer. Geller said he would not show, but then changed his mind and told Geller he would. It was an attempt to induce a call from Romanello, but he followed his gut, which was telling him that he was beat. He found the strength to fold the hand, and as promised Gellar showed the kings-over boat.

When Romanello flipped over his cards, Matusow almost jumped out of his seat, and admitted that he would not have been able to get off the jacks-over full house the way Romanello was able to. The fold saved Romanello $4200 in chips, at a point in the tournament when that amount was important.
