The original reason to three bet pre-flop was for value because you were holding a good hand. Most players would only make this play with a big pair or big slick. Today’s player will make this play holding just about anything, especially if they have position in the hand. But three betting with big hands exclusively will become predictable against good players rather quickly, so widening the range of hands that you three bet will change your table image. It will also keep your opponents guessing as to what you’re holding when you make the move again. Now when you do get good hands you’ll get more action on them.
If you notice that opponents are looking you up more often after you three bet, it will be profitable to tighten up for a while. Your fold equity has diminished, so the move doesn’t have the same potential that it did before. If they’re backing off your three bet you can use it more often.
The best time to three bet is against a loose player who often bets into any sign of weakness from his opponents. This player will get off their hand with more frequency because they are making it two bets with weaker hands to begin with.
Hands that work well in a three bet situation are suited connectors or connecting hands like 10-9, J-10. Suited aces are also decent candidates for a three bet, but you’ll need to see a couple of cards in the suit you want to continue any aggression.
