Over Betting
The amount that you bet in online poker no-limit hold’em cash games is very important. Based on how you bet, your opponent will make decisions on what you may be holding. So amounts should be chosen based on the cards in play, and on the poker player you’re up against in the hand. Being able to mislead an opponent based on the bet that you make can be a very profitable play, and one of these key poker strategy bets is the ‘over bet’. This simply means making a bet that’s bigger than the pot.

Over bets are commonly used by aggressive players that are trying to steal a pot from a late position. The bet is so large compared to the size of the pot that it’s rarely worth the price for anyone to call. But today’s online player loves to make hero calls when they think a player is stealing. And for that reason, the over bet can be a great weapon to get value on big hands; hands that would rarely get any action when played in a traditional manner.
So when you find yourself in a position with a big hand, when it looks like it’s an opportunity where you could try a steal, you can over bet your hand to make it look like you’re stealing – in the hopes that someone will call you because they’re sure you’re bluffing. You’ll get calls from second pair or even ace-high if the action was slow enough on the earlier streets. There usually needs to be a lull in the betting for the bet to look like a possible steal attempt.
A normal value bet will just scare them away, and you won’t win anything but the early bets. The next time you have a monster hand and are slow-playing it, put in a crazy bet twice the size of the pot on the river; you might be surprised how much action you get. It’s not a move that you’ll get to use very often, and it will never work against the same players twice in the same session. But every little bit helps.
