Choosing Satellites
The World Series of Poker will be upon us before we know it, and if you want to get to the big show this year it’s time to start thinking about satellite action. Poker rooms like Pinnacle Sports Poker offer satellite action for just about every big-name tournament there is these days. You can play poker satellites online for the WSOP, the WPT, APT or EPT. Then there’s all the regular satellite action for weekend tourneys or big online events. The selection seems endless; you only have to find the action that is best for you.

Playing satellite tournaments will eventually put you in a place where you could win some big money for little investment. But satellite events don’t pay you any immediate reward; all you get is a seat and a chance to win something. So your investment should be smaller than a regular tournament you might play.
The possible reward is less than a regular multi-table tournament, so your risk should be less too. It doesn’t make any sense to spend all of your bankroll to get a seat in another tournament. There won’t be any way to replenish it as you’re playing, so don’t play strictly satellite events or you’ll go broke.
Your typical investment in a multi-table tournament shouldn’t exceed 15% of your bankroll, and even that is a significant amount. Most multi-table tournaments should only cost you around 5%, especially if you plan on playing them on a regular basis. Satellite action should be even cheaper than that, and shouldn’t exceed 5%. Try to keep the cost of satellites to less than that, as 1 or 2% of your bankroll is plenty.
Once you know how much you should spend, you should choose satellites for the events that in which you would like to play. Playing a satellite tournament just because it’s about to start is not the way to properly approach things. You should decide which events you would like to win your way into playing. Then you can schedule the satellite tournaments for that event around your playing time.
Go after the event that most appeals to you; you’ll eventually get lucky and win one. You might as well be in an event that you’d like to be playing in for bigger stakes when it does happen.
