You also need to understand that a bluff requires the proper setting to appear valid. You’ll see so many players at Pinnacle Sports Poker – and any other poker room – use a desperation bluff as a poker tactic to win a hand when they should have just cut their losses and folded or checked out the hand.

Most bluffs needs to be created earlier in the hand. The more elaborate the bluff, the easier it will be for your opponents to believe it. If they don’t believe it, there’s no way it can succeed. Trying to bluff after you just called a bets on earlier streets, without ever showing aggression, is a low-percentage play. Bluffing after a missed straight or flush draw is another situation where the attempt will usually cost you money.

Successful bluffs have to have some aggression in them other than the big river bet. It will usually have either a check-raise or re-raise in it, pre-flop or after the flop. The goal is to give your opponent the idea that you have the best hand, and you can’t do that if you don’t make the moves that a player with a big hand would make. Making a re-raise or check-raise earlier in the hand will save you money if your opponent does have a big hand against you. If they return aggression, you’ll know that continuing with the bluff will be a futile play, and you’ll be able to abandon it without losing any more chips.

The only time it makes sense to make a desperate-looking bet is when you’re sure that your opponent is bluffing at you. Then it will look like you were trapping them, and you’ll be able to pick up the pot. But you should be very confident that you have the best hand. Bluffing on an ace hitting the river can sometimes be a successful bluff, but you’ll only want to attempt it against tight players who would be capable of putting you on the ace that you’re representing.
