When it comes to gaining an edge in online poker, nothing is too far-fetched. Anything that one can do to mislead an opponent can bring bets to your stack, and a skilled player will have lots of different tricks to use on their opponents to fool them. Deception in poker is relatively simple in theory; you present yourself as something that you’re not, and your opponents will react incorrectly when they play against you. One such poker strategy is to pretend that you’re a complete donkey, and that you have no clue what you’re doing.

We want to look like we know what we’re doing so other players are intimidated and won’t want to mess around when they’re in a hand with us. But sometimes doing just the opposite can be an effective manoeuvre against the right kind of opponent. Instead of presenting a skilled player image, you sit down and play like a donk for a little while.
If you get a little lucky you’ll hit a good draw and put a bad beat on someone. More often than not, your opponent will have something to say to you along the lines of how bad of a player you are. When this happens you should run with it. Respond with statements like, “it’s a gambling game, I like to gamble”. Or something stupid like, “I had good pot odds to make that call,” when it’s obvious that you didn’t. What you’re trying to do is expose yourself as a weak player to everyone at the table.
Once you achieve this table image you can change gears and start playing a proper style of game. Every time you have a good hand you’ll get action from the other players because they’ll believe they can outplay you later in the hand. You’ll also be able to use advanced tactics like early-position blind steals, because everyone will figure you’re too inexperienced to raise anything but a good hand from early positions.
The funny part is that even after you burn these opponents a few times they’ll just think you’re getting lucky, and it will take a long time before they’ll realize they were hustled by a fake table image.
