Fischman Dumps at WSOPE
With less than 30 people left in the 2008 WSOPE Main Event – one of the world’s biggest poker tournaments – Scott Fischman played a poker hand that would make most people wonder, “What was he thinking?” Fischman is a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, and has 67 poker tournament cashes for over $2 million in winnings over the last five years. He’s widely feared on the pro circuit and plays an aggressive game with which few can contend. But at the WSOPE this week Fischman decided to make a move at the wrong time, against the wrong player.

He was in a hand against internet young gun Brian Townsend, and a member of the November Nine, Ivan Demidov. Townsend became famous for getting caught cheating online through the use of numerous user accounts on the same poker site. His online name was “Sbrugby”, but he’s mainly shifted to live tournament play over the last couple of years.
Fischman limped into the hand and was raised by Townsend, who made it 28,000 to go. Then Ivan Demidov decided that he would take a stab at the pot by raising it to 56,000. Now, most players would look at a raise and re-raise and get out of the way, but Fischman decided that he wanted the money in the pot, and raised the bet to 150,000.
After agonizing over what he should do, Townsend raised the remainder of his stack and made the call around 140,000 more for Demidov. He eventually decided that he had to get out of the way and mucked his hand. Fischman was pot-committed and he made the call for the remaining 44,000. To everyone’s surprise, Fischman turned over 10-2 off-suit against Townsend’s K-K.
The board came out 3-6-A-K-10 and Townsend’s kings held up. Fischman lost a good percentage of his stack, which dropped down to 265,000 after the hand was finished. Only he knew what he was thinking, but Brian Townsend was happy to see his stack climb to 355,000.
